What is IT & Software Outsourcing?

Outsourcing is a process by which the service provider or the contractual server passes on its work to a third party, particularly in order to reduce costs and to improve quality of goods or services. Software and IT outsourcing refers to the same process if it’s done in the field of IT software.

Most of the IT and software industries prefer to go for IT & software outsourcing since the parent companies are mostly based in developed countries like the United States and the United Kingdom, where the operational and labor costs are high and the quality of service is also not that good, since the people out there do not work overtime and take up a limited amount of work. In order to improve quality of service of the firm software projects of these companies are outsourced to other companies based in countries like India and China where labor is cheap and the quality of service is good, hence saving most of their operating costs.

Software and IT outsourcing includes the outsourcing of software projects and/or the outsourcing of Business processes like call centers and Knowledge Processes. Each outsource is known as a process and every company who gets the process needs to meet the process guidelines and process deadline. Process deadline is the date on which the project needs to be submitted to the client.

Another part of outsourcing is multisourcing, which is followed by most of the US and UK based software companies presently. In this type of IT & Software outsourcing chunks of client work is outsourced to different companies across the globe in order to meet the client requirements and the deadline. It is also required to improve quality of the outsourced software and processes and by using this method the process becomes cheaper and ultimately the quality of the final product is improved.

Off-shoring is a term very similar to Outsourcing. However the only difference between them is that outsourcing refers to the transfer of processes, while off-shoring refers to the transfer of projects overseas. In the present case most of the IT & Software outsourcing is off-shoring.

The process of Outsourcing is the key to the development of the IT industry in India and China who are the two most common partners of the US firms in outsourcing business. Around 80% of the work from the US and UK based companies are outsourced in both of these countries. These countries lead because they are the worlds biggest knowledge based economies and are fast developing ones.
